Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida (BCBSFL) and its subsidiaries serve more than 8.8 million people. Since 1944, the company has been dedicated to meeting the diverse needs of all those it serves by offering an array of choices. BCBSFL is a not-for-profit, policyholder-owned, tax-paying mutual company. Headquartered in Jacksonville, Fla., BCBSFL is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, an association of independent Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies. Today, the company's focus remains primarily in the health industry, but BCBSFL is more than a health insurer. In response to a vastly changing marketplace, BCBSFL is involved with companies to meet the diverse needs of the health industry overall. BCBSFL's premiums increased to $7.6 billion in 2007 from $6.8 billion in 2006. Total revenue increased to $8.3 billion in 2007 from $7.5 billion in 2006. Net income in 2007 decreased to $214 million from $311 million in 2006.
