CareFirst BlueCross and BlueShield is the largest health care insurer in the Mid-Atlantic region, serving more than 3.3 million members, including approximately 515,000 members in the Federal Employees Health program. CareFirst, Inc. (CareFirst) is the not-for-profit, non-stock, parent company of CareFirst of Maryland, Inc. and Group Hospitalization and Medical Services, Inc., affiliates that do business as CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. A third affiliate does business as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware. CareFirst, Inc. is governed by a Board of Directors and special statutes regulating its business in Maryland, the District of Columbia, Delaware and Northern Virginia. CareFirst has more than 6,000 employees in Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, Northern Virginia and West Virginia. CareFirst also has more than 80 percent of all of the Maryland/D.C./Delaware/Northern Virginia region's health care providers participating in one or more of its provider networks CareFirst offers self-insured employees administrative services through its third party administrator, NCAS. CareFirst also operates CASCI, a subsidiary based in Charleston, WV, that annually processes more than 5 million claims from federal government subscribers and dependents as part of FEP.
