Anthem is an Indiana-domiciled company providing health care benefits to more than 12.6 million people. Anthem is the Blue Cross and Blue Shield licensee for Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Colorado, Nevada, Maine and Virginia (excluding the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC). Anthem's product portfolio includes a diversified mix of managed care products. Anthem's product portfolio includes a diversified mix of managed care products, including preferred provider organizations, or PPOs, health maintenance organizations, or HMOs, and point of service, or POS plans, as well as traditional indemnity products. In addition to Blue Cross and Blue Shield health plans in its nine states, Anthem also has other subsidiaries that offer a full line of complementary services, including vision, dental and behavioral health. Anthem Prescription Management is a pharmacy benefits management company; Anthem Life provides life and disability income insurance; and Health Management Systems offers third party dental administration. Anthem and WellPoint announced in October 2003 that they signed a definitive merger agreement has created the nation's leading health benefits company. The combined company serves nearly 27 million medical members, and operate as a Blue Cross or Blue Cross Blue Shield licensee in 13 states. The new company is called WellPoint Inc.
