Infusion therapy involves the administration of medication, nutrition, or other fluids from a reservoir container into the patient's circulatory system through an infusion line. Although more commonly performed in a hospital or other in-patient setting, infusion therapy may also be administered at home as a result of technological advances in drug delivery and growing cost containment initiatives. The number of patients receiving home infusion therapy continues to rise. In 2001, about 1.1 million patients received home infusion therapy. By 2008, that number had increased to 1.8 million, reflecting greater than 9% annual growth.
