Description

Kroger, as of January 31, 2004, directly or through subsidiaries operates 2,532 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 32 states. Kroger's current growth strategy emphasizes self-development and ownership of store real estate. In addition to supermarkets, Kroger operates 802 convenience stores, 440 fine jewelry stores, 466 supermarket fuel centers and 41 food processing plants. Approximately 40% of the convenience stores operated by Kroger's subsidiaries were owned. The convenience stores offer a limited assortment of staple food items and general merchandise and, in most cases, sell gasoline. Kroger's banners include Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Food 4 Less, King Soopers, Smith's, Fry's and Fry's Marketplace, Dillons, Quality Food Centers and City Market. Kroger intends to develop new food and convenience store locations and will continue to assess existing stores as to possible replacement, remodeling, enlarging, or closing.
