The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS, reported that in 2005, total U.S. healthcare expenditures grew by 6.9% to $2.0 trillion. Hospital services is the largest single category of healthcare at 31% of total healthcare spending in 2005, or $611.6 billion, as reported by CMS. CMS projects the hospital services category to grow by at least 6.7% per year through 2015. According to the American Hospital Association, there are approximately 4,900 inpatient hospitals in the U.S. which are not-for-profit owned, investor owned, or state or local government owned. Of these hospitals, approximately 40% are located in non-urban communities.
