When the phone rings 475,000 times today at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, 6,000 operators will be standing by, supported by an advanced technical infrastructure developed in the past five years. Mike Jacobi, a program manager at Pearson Government Solutions, said May 10 that the agency is expecting 475,000 calls to its 1-800-MEDICARE call centers in the hours before the midnight close of the open season for enrollment in the new Medicare prescription drug benefit program.
