Extendicare is one of the largest operators of long-term care facilities in North America. Extendicare, through its subsidiaries, operates more than 250 facilities in the U.S. and Canada, with capacity for 26,300 residents. Extendicare provides medical specialty services such as sub acute care and rehabilitative therapy services in the U.S., and offers home health care services in Canada. Approximately 75% of Extendicare's business is in the U.S., conducted through Extendicare Health Services Inc. (EHSI). One of Extendicare's chief goals has been to dispose of assets that are not strategic to its core nursing and assisted living business, or that cannot meet its performance criteria.
